Go talk to someone on the street and explain that people are paid to play eSports, and you&#8217;ll likely get a look that says you&#8217;re just as crazy as the players are.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>But the great thing is that interest in eSports is growing, and recent events have helped boost its reputation (and therefore its acceptance as the real deal) worldwide.<\/strong> Here&#8217;s a closer look at two of these events &#8212; please reference these if anyone ever gives you the &#8220;you&#8217;re crazy&#8221; look when you talk about eSports.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">League of Legends Championships Draw in Millions of Viewers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For starters, take a look at the online multiplayer game\u00a0<em>League of Legends<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Riot Games, creator of\u00a0<em>League<\/em>, started hosting tournaments and championships of the game, with many participating official teams <a title=\"&quot;Why eSports are attracting sponsors like Coke&quot;\" href=\"http:\/\/tech.fortune.cnn.com\/2013\/11\/06\/esports-sponsorships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">backed by sponsors like Coke<\/a>. <strong>These championships only grew in size and viewership, until they exploded expectations last year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Season 3 World Championship finals in October of 2013 <a title=\"&quot;'League of Legends' eSports finals watched by 32 million people&quot;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2013\/11\/19\/5123724\/league-of-legends-world-championship-32-million-viewers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">boasted some incredible stats<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; a completely sold-out Staples Center where the finals took place<br \/>\n&#8211; 32 million viewers total<br \/>\n&#8211; 8.5 million viewers streaming at the same time<br \/>\n&#8211; millions of dollars in prize money<\/p>\n<p>Compare those numbers to the fact that 300,000 people watched the British royal wedding on Livestream.com, and only\u00a0<a title=\"How I Met Your Mother Season Finale stats\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/live-feed\/tv-ratings-how-i-met-your-mother-finale-692548\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">12.9 million people<\/a> watched the recent season finale of <em>How I Met Your Mother<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Add that to the fact that <a title=\"How Gaming Makes You Smarter\" href=\"http:\/\/www.daskeyboard.com\/blog\/gaming-makes-you-smarter\/\">gaming has been found to make you smarter<\/a>, and there&#8217;s strong proof that the public is more than ready to watch eSports and accept them as a legitimate form of sports and entertainment.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/7GNiOTw.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"543\" height=\"274\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">South Korea University Accepts eSports Players as Athletes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Additionally, consider the way that eSports players are starting to be treated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The best example comes from South Korea&#8217;s Chung-Ang University, one of the country&#8217;s top-10 schools, which recently announced that <a title=\"&quot;This University Cares About What Truly Matters: Being Good At Gaming&quot;\" href=\"http:\/\/kotaku.com\/this-university-cares-about-what-truly-matters-being-g-1547041493\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">it considers eSports gamers to be the same as professional athletes<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Interested students can apply to be considered for admission as an eSports athlete to the university&#8217;s Department of Sports Science. The admission policy states that eSports will be labeled as an individual sport.<\/p>\n<p>Now, instead of commiserating over the fact that they&#8217;ll never go to college for a sports scholarship, gamers actually have a chance at being recognized for their skills, <em>just<\/em> as football stars or swim team members are.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/96ikX9E.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"542\" height=\"274\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\">The State of eSports Will Only Improve<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The eSports revolution has begun, and things continue to look up.
